What’s the Difference Between UI and UX Design?

One of the most popular questions is: what is the difference between UI and UX design?

Today we will answer this question and give you a deeper insight into the world of UI|UX design.

The difference between UI and UX design

It is quite common to use these two terms interchangeably or, quite often, incorrectly. If you have ever thought: “So, what is the difference between the Ux and Ui design?”, this article is right for you.

What is UI design?

UI refers to the user interface: all the buttons, visual and interactive elements a person uses in order to interact with digital products: websites, applications etc.

An essential difference between UI and UX design is that the UI designer is a visual “expert”. S/he chooses the color, typography, mockups and layouts.

The UI designer creates the graphical portions of mobile applications, websites and devices: the elements the user interacts with in the first place. Unlike UX, which can be referred to any product, UI refers exclusively to digital products. UI designers seek to make the apps and websites visually attractive and very easy to use and navigate.

The core task of a UI designer includes:

  • Organizing attractive page layouts
  • Choosing color palettes and fonts
  • Making the product more interactive with buttons, scrollers, toggles, drop-down menus and text fields
  • Making high fidelity wireframes and layouts, to introduce what the final design will look like
  • Working closely with developers to achieve the final goal.

Basically, imagine the UI design as a series of screens, pages and visual elements, such as buttons and icons, that help people to interact with the product or service.

As you have already noticed, there is a huge difference between UI and UX design. Keep on reading and get to know the main features of UX design.

Let’s go!

What is UX design?

Ux design is the careful planning and creation of a user experience. It tackles the issue of creating a product/service that will solve a concrete problem, making sure the proposed solution is easy and enjoyable to use.

UX has been created as a result of improvements to the user interface itself. Firstly, it was something the users could interact with and later it turned into how users actually felt about those interactions.

UX designers focus on the experience people have with a product. The goal is to create accessible, enjoyable products to use. This is the distinctive difference between the UI and UX design to take into consideration. The term UX can be used with both digital and non-digital products and services.

The main task of a UX designer includes:

  • Conducting user research using different UX research methods, in order to understand the users’ behavior, ideas and reactions
  • Developing user personas based on target customers
  • Creating user journey maps, in order to understand the sequence of their behavior
  • Analyzing those maps carefully
  • Performing user testing to identify the problems and design decisions
  • Collaborating with UI designers, stakeholders and developers to achieve success.

The main difference between UI and UX design

At the most basic level, UI is made up of necessary components that enable someone to interact with a product or a service. UX, on the other hand, is the experience the user takes from the entire procedure.

It is essential to distinguish the total user experience from the user interface (UI). For example, imagine a website with movie reviews. Even if the UI for finding a film is perfect, the user can still consider the UX poor because s/he may want extra information about a small independent release, while the database may only contain movies from major studios.

So let’s keep in mind the list of the main differences between UI and UX design.

  • When we say UI, we mean the design of the interfaces the person uses to interact with a digital product
  • UX is all about research, analysis and understanding the customers’ behavior, minds and reactions. UI is also user-centered design, but it is primarily concerned about the visual and interactive design. UI is the more artistic side, while the UX – the problem solving one.
  • UX is quite a common term that covers all kinds of human experiences and interactions, even such actions as booking a flight or reading a book.
